This article provides a step-by-step guide, accompanied by a video, for installing a drill chuck and arbor into a drill press, specifically using the G7947 model. It explains spindle types, outlines safety and cleaning procedures, and offers tips for proper assembly and maintenance to ensure a secure and effective installation.
In this instructional video, Kent and Shaun walk you through the proper installation of a drill chuck and arbor into a drill press, using the G7947 17" Floor Drill Press as the model for demonstration. We've also included the steps below the video so you can follow along.
Understanding Drill Press Spindles
- Tapered spindles: Most common type, using either Jacobs Taper (JT) or Morse Taper (MT).
- Jacobs Taper (JT): Available in sizes 0, 1, 2-Short, 2, 33, 3, 4, 5 and 6.
- Morse Taper (MT): Available in sizes 1 to 6.
- Threaded spindles: Less common, requiring a chuck with matching threads.
Installing the Drill Chuck
- Safety first: Disconnect the drill press from the power source.
- Remove old chuck (if necessary): Use a taper drift key to gently tap the chuck out of the spindle.
- Clean components: Thoroughly clean the chuck, arbor, and spindle with lacquer thinner or acetone.
- Assemble chuck and arbor: Insert the arbor into the back of the chuck and tap the arbor tang lightly to secure it.
- Insert into spindle: Align the arbor tang with the spindle slot and gently tap the chuck to seat it firmly.
- Check fit: Pull down on the chuck to ensure a secure fit.
Additional Tips
- Match the chuck's taper or thread to the spindle's specifications.
- Use a rubber-faced mallet to avoid damaging the chuck.
- Always clean the mating surfaces before assembly.
- If the chuck loosens during operation, stop and re-tighten it.
Note: Always refer to the specific instructions for your drill press model.
