- Safety first: Disconnect the jointer from power.
- Clear workspace: Remove the jointer fence and cutter head guard.
- Locate top dead center: Determine the highest point of cutter head rotation using a straight edge and mark it on the fence.
- Position jointer pal: Place the jointer pal on the outfeed table aligned with the marked line on the fence.
- Create reference lines: Scribe or pencil a second vertical line on the fence and a horizontal line on the outfeed table using the jointer pal.
- Insert first knife: Place the first knife in the cutter head and align it with the scribe mark on the fence using the jointer pal.
- Secure knife: Tighten the gib bolts to secure the knife.
- Install remaining knives: Repeat steps 6 and 7 for the remaining knives.
- Loosen knives: Slightly loosen the gib bolts of the knives to be adjusted.
- Shift knives: Use the jointer pal to reposition the knives, ensuring they don't overlap.
- Tighten knives: Retighten the gib bolts to secure the knives in their new positions.
- Remove jointer pal: Once all knives are adjusted, remove the jointer pal.
- Reassemble jointer: Reinstall the cutter head guard, fence, and reconnect power.
