We’re often asked two important questions:
-
“How can I clean off the protective coating on my machine?”
-
“How can I clean my machine and prevent or remove rust?”
Why There’s a Protective Coating
The unpainted metal surfaces on your machine are coated with a heavy-duty rust preventative to protect against corrosion during shipment and storage. While this coating is highly effective, it does require some effort to clean. Taking the time to do this properly will help you better understand how to care for your machine and keep it in top condition.
What You’ll Need:
-
Disposable rags
-
Cleaner/degreaser (WD-40 works well)
-
Plastic paint scraper (optional)
-
Safety glasses
-
Disposable gloves
Always use cleaning products in a well-ventilated area and follow all safety instructions provided by the manufacturer.
Removing the Rust Preventative:
-
Put on safety glasses and gloves.
-
Spray the coated surfaces with a liberal amount of cleaner/degreaser.
-
Let it soak for 5–10 minutes.
-
Wipe off the loosened coating using rags.
-
If using a plastic scraper, remove as much as possible before wiping.
-
-
Repeat as needed until the surface is clean.
-
Apply a quality metal protectant to all unpainted surfaces to prevent future rust.
Removing and Preventing Rust:
-
Light surface rust can usually be removed with:
-
A spray oil (like WD-40)
-
A Scotch-Brite pad or other scuff pad
-
-
To prevent rust and improve work surface glide, apply:
-
Slip It
-
Talcum powder
-
Johnson’s Paste Wax
-
These rust prevention products are often available at local hardware stores.
