Setting Up and Using the C2316 Reversible Stile and Rail Set
Preparation
- Safety first: Disconnect the shaper from the power source.
- Align fences: Ensure the fence faces are parallel to the miter slot.
Setting Up for Stiles
- Assemble cutters: Place the profile cutter, followed by the flat cutter and bearing onto the spindle, making sure the cutters face to the right. Secure with spindle nuts.
- Adjust height: Lower the spindle until only the bearing is visible, then align the fence faces with the guide bearing edge.
- Set cutter height: Raise the spindle so the flat cutter is 1/8 to 3/16 inch below the stile material.
- Lock spindle: Secure the spindle at the desired height.
Making the First Cut
- Position material: Place the material against the fence with the final showing side down.
- Turn on shaper: Engage the power switch.
- Feed material: Use push blocks to guide the material steadily through the cutter.
- Turn off shaper: Disengage the power switch.
- Inspect cut: Examine the cut to ensure correct cutter height. Adjust as needed.
Cutting Stiles
- Cut production pieces: Once satisfied with the test cut, process the remaining stile material.
- Lock spindle: Secure the spindle after each cut.
Setting Up for Rails
- Disassemble cutters: Remove the bearing, flat cutter, and profile cutter from the spindle.
- Reassemble cutters: Reassemble the cutters in the order of flat cutter, bearing, and profile cutter.
- Secure cutters: Tighten the spindle nuts to secure the cutters.
- Adjust height: Raise or lower the spindle until the top of the flat cutter aligns with the bottom of the slot in the profile.
- Square miter gauge: Ensure the miter gauge is at a 90-degree angle to the fence.
Cutting Rails
- Support workpiece: Use a backing board against the miter gauge to prevent tear-out.
- Position workpiece: Place the workpiece against the backing board and fence.
- Turn on shaper: Engage the power switch.
- Feed workpiece: Feed the workpiece through the cutter while holding it firmly against the miter gauge.
- Turn off shaper: Disengage the power switch.
Checking and Adjusting Fit
- Test fit: Assemble a stile and rail to check the fit.
- Adjust as needed: Add shims if necessary to tighten the fit. Check for flush top and bottom edges.
- Continue cutting: Once satisfied with the fit, proceed with cutting the remaining rail ends.
Safety Reminders
- Always disconnect the shaper from power before making adjustments.
- Use push blocks to maintain control of the workpiece.
