This guide details setup and maintenance for the Grizzly planer G0453, covering safety precautions, knife replacement and adjustment, bed and feed roller height settings, roller spring tension, chip deflector and anti-kickback finger adjustments, V-belt replacement, and lubrication procedures. It emphasizes unplugging before work and offers technical support contact.
This video provides step-by-step guidance on setting up and maintaining a Grizzly planer, focusing on the G0453 model but is applicable to other planers as well. We'll discuss key aspects of planer setup, safety precautions, and maintenance practices.
We've also included the step-by-step instructions below so you can follow along.
Important Safety Precautions:
- Disconnect Power: Always disconnect the planer from the power source before performing any setup or maintenance.
- Wear Safety Glasses: Remember to wear your safety glasses.
- Wear Gloves When Handling Knives: Planer knives are extremely sharp; always wear heavy leather gloves to reduce the risk of cutting injuries.
- Read Manual: Watch this entire video and read your planer's manual thoroughly before you begin.
- Follow Shop Safety Procedures: Most importantly, follow all shop safety procedures.
- Technical Support: You can call technical support at 570-546-9663 if you need further assistance.
1. Setting & Replacing Knives
- Unplug the planer from the power source.
- Remove the dust hood.
- Take off the top cover to expose the cutter head.
- Remove the belt cover.
- Rotate the cutter head pulley until you can easily access one knife.
- For G0453: Loosen the gib bolts until the knife is completely free.
- For G0454: Loosen the gib bolts until the knife is loose. Choose either jack screws or springs for adjustment and remove the one you won’t use.
- If replacing or sharpening, remove the knife from the cutter head.
- Clean out any debris from the knife slot.
- Position the knife gauge so the knife edge is directly under the center pad. Make sure all legs of the gauge sit firmly on the cutter head.
- Using Jack Screws (G0453 & G0454):
- Insert the correct hex wrench (2.5mm for G0453, 3mm for G0454) through the access holes.
- Turn to raise or lower the knife until it just touches the center pad of the gauge.
- Check both sides for even height.
- Using Springs (G0454):
- Push down on the knife gauge until all legs are firmly on the cutter head and the knife just touches the center pad.
- With the gauge still in place, slightly tighten the gib bolts, starting in the middle and alternating left and right toward the ends.
- Remove the knife gauge.
- Repeat the tightening sequence two more times until the gib bolts are fully tight. Tighten gradually and evenly to avoid distortion.
- Repeat these steps for the remaining knives.
- Reinstall the belt cover, top cover, and dust hood.
2. Setting Bed Roller Height
- Unplug the planer.
- Lower the table all the way down.
- Use a 3mm hex wrench and a 14mm open-end wrench.
- Check roller height with a Rotacator or straight edge and feeler gauges.
- Set rollers 0.002"–0.020" above the table surface (higher for rough stock, lower for milled lumber).
- If adjustment is needed:
- Loosen the set screw on the bed roller adjustment bolt.
- Rotate the eccentric bolt to raise or lower the roller.
- Tighten the set screw.
- Make sure both sides are the same height. Adjusting one side can affect the other.
3. Setting Feed Rollers, Chip Breaker & Pressure Bar Heights
Important: Knives must be set correctly first. A Rotacator is recommended; if not available, use two identical blocks and feeler gauges.
- Unplug the planer.
- Lower the table about 4" below the head casting and lock it.
- Remove the dust hood, belt cover, and top cover.
- Place the Rotacator under the cutter head center.
- Find the Bottom Dead Center (BDC) of any knife by rocking the pulley.
- Zero the Rotacator dial at the lowest knife point.
- Move the feed speed knob to neutral so the infeed roller rotates freely.
- Position the Rotacator under the right side of the infeed roller.
- Find the BDC of a serrated edge by rocking the roller. It should be 0.040" below the knives.
- If needed, loosen the jam nut and adjust the set screw until the Rotacator reads 0.040".
- Repeat on the left side.
- Recheck both sides and adjust until even. Tighten jam nuts.
- Repeat for the outfeed roller (set to 0.020" below knives).
- Set the chip breaker to 0.040" below knives.
- For G0454 only: Set the pressure bar to 0.008" below knives.
- Reinstall covers and dust hood.
4. Roller Spring Tension
- Unplug the planer.
- Use a 6mm hex wrench to adjust tension caps on top of the head casting.
- Factory setting: Caps protrude 1/8" above the casting surface.
- Adjust tension for material:
- Lighter tension for smooth lumber (reduce if roller marks appear).
- More tension for rough lumber (increase if wood stalls).
5. Chip Deflector Adjustment
- Unplug the planer.
- Remove the dust port, top cover, and belt cover.
- Rotate the cutter head until a knife is closest to the chip deflector.
- Measure the gap—it should be about 1/4".
- If needed, loosen hex bolts, adjust to 1/4", and retighten.
- Reassemble covers and dust hood.
6. Anti-Kickback Fingers
- Unplug the planer.
- Check fingers regularly to ensure they swing freely.
- If sticky, clean with wood resin solvent.
- Inspect for damage—replace the entire device if any finger is damaged.
- Do not lubricate the fingers.
7. V-Belt Replacement & Tensioning
- Unplug the planer.
- Remove the front panel and V-belt cover.
- For replacement:
- Raise the motor to release tension.
- Remove old belts and replace with a matched set of three.
- Adjust tension by raising/lowering the motor with hex nuts.
- Correct tension = 3/4" deflection with moderate finger pressure midway between pulleys.
- Tighten hex nuts and reinstall covers.
8. Lubrication
Always unplug the planer before maintenance.
- Feed Roller Bushings: Every 8 hours of use, add 2–3 drops of SAE 30 oil to the center hole of the four feed roller tension bolts on top of the head casting.
- Table Height Columns: Apply a thin coat of SAE 30 oil to the outside of the columns.
- Table Height Lead Screws: Brush on light multi-purpose grease to the lead screw threads inside the columns. Move the table up and down to spread grease.
- Table Height Worm Gear:
- Remove the three cap screws and lift the housing and handwheel.
- Clean debris, apply moderate grease to gear teeth, and reassemble.
- Table Height Chain & Sprockets:
- Remove front and rear panels.
- Clean chain and sprockets with rags and mineral spirits.
- Apply light grease and reinstall panels.
- Drive Chain & Sprockets:
- Remove handwheel and safety covers.
- Clean chain and sprockets, apply light grease, and reassemble.
- Gearbox Oil:
- Change after first 20 hours, then annually.
- Remove fill and drain plugs, drain oil, replace Teflon tape, reinstall drain plug.
- Refill with 80/90 weight gear oil to fill level.
- Reinstall fill plug and chain cover.
