In this video, we'll demonstrate how to replace the sandpaper on the Grizzly G0458Z and G0458 18-inch open-end drum sander, including helpful tips to ensure a smooth and successful replacement process.
We've also included step-by-step instructions below so you can follow along.
Important Safety Precautions:
- Unplug Power: Make sure the machine is unplugged from power before you begin.
Items Needed:
- Flathead screwdriver
- 4mm hex wrench
- 5mm hex wrench
- Sharp utility knife
- New roll of 3-inch sandpaper
Step-by-Step Instructions:
1. Removing the Old Sandpaper:
- Unplug the machine from power.
- Remove the bolts securing the top cover.
- Remove the steel plate (if present).
- Loosen the right side spring-loaded clamp. A flathead screwdriver may be used to gently free the sandpaper if the clamp is seated tightly.
- Rotate the drum and carefully remove the sandpaper for most of its length.
- Loosen the left clamp.
- Fully remove the old sandpaper strip. Try not to rip or tear it if possible, as it can be used as a template.
2. Creating a Pattern for the New Sandpaper:
- Method 1: Using the Old Sandpaper as a Template:
- Lay the old sandpaper strip flat.
- Place the new roll of sandpaper next to it.
- Use the old sandpaper as a guide to draw and cut the new sandpaper strip to the same dimensions and with the same angled cuts.
- Method 2: Using the Provided Dimensions:
- Cut a length of new sandpaper 86 inches long.
- Measure 12 and a half inches from one end and cut from the corner to this 12 and a half inch mark.
- From the same corner, measure 2 inches along the cut edge and make the next cut at a 90-degree angle.
- Repeat this cut layout on the opposite side of the sandpaper strip, but mirrored.
3. Installing the New Sandpaper Roll:
- Secure the angled end of the new sandpaper strip into the left clamp and tighten it.
- Ensure that the angled side of the sandpaper is flush with the left drum edge. Overlapping may cause difficulty closing the cover.
- Wrap the sandpaper strip around the drum, ensuring there are no bubbles or overlapping edges.
- When the sandpaper reaches the right side of the drum, move it out of the way.
- Using a 4mm hex wrench, insert the wrench into the access hole on the drum.
- Rotate the drum towards you until the hex wrench rests on the top of the frame.
- When you reach the end of the drum, ensure that the right clamp is open.
- Insert the tag end of the sandpaper into the right clamp. The drum is spring-loaded to allow tension to be applied.
- Twist the drum with one hand to apply tension.
- Insert the tag end of the paper into the right clamp and tighten it down. You may need to notch the end of the sandpaper for a clean edge alignment.
- Once the sandpaper is secured in both clamps and tensioned, remove the 4mm hex wrench.
- Reinstall the steel plate (if removed).
- Close up the top cover and secure it with the bolts.
Additional Tips for Installation:
- After removing the old sandpaper, clean the sanding drum with a solvent like acetone on a clean rag to remove any residue buildup.
- To help minimize paper movement during operation, consider using a very light coat of spray-on adhesive sparingly on the drum before applying the new sandpaper strip. This will help seat the strip.
