Can I cut metal or other non-wood materials with my planer?
No. Grizzly planers are designed for cutting natural wood only.
While they may physically cut other materials, doing so can:
- Cause serious injury to the operator or bystanders
- Damage the machine
- Void the warranty
Always use the machine only as intended.
Can I use my planer without a dust collector?
Yes, but it’s not recommended.
Operating without dust collection can:
- Lead to dust buildup around and inside the machine
- Require additional cleaning
- Create airborne dust, which can be harmful to your health
For best performance and safety, connect your planer to a properly designed dust collection system that meets or exceeds the recommended CFM for your machine’s dust port.
What motor size do I need for my planer/moulder?
Motor size depends on:
- Average stock width
- Wood type (e.g., softwood vs hardwood)
- Frequency and intensity of use
While any of our machines can technically cut their maximum width with a slow enough feed rate, this can cause ripples and chipping. On the other hand, feeding too aggressively can overheat and damage the motor.
General guidelines:
- A 1.5 HP motor can handle 6" wide hardwoods at a fast feed rate without bogging down.
- A 3 HP motor can handle about twice that width under similar conditions.
Choose a motor size that can handle your typical workload without consistently stressing the motor.
If a machine is rated for 110V or 220V, can I just plug it into either?
No.
While some machines are rated for dual voltage, they are typically prewired for 110V at the factory.
To use 220V, you must:
- Rewire the motor
- Replace the plug
- Possibly replace other components, as specified in the Owner’s Manual
⚠️ Important: To ensure safety, the conversion should only be performed by a qualified electrician or trained service personnel.
How do I convert a machine to 220V?
Before starting, check the circuit requirements in your Owner’s Manual and ensure you have the correct 220V outlet installed.
The process includes:
- Disconnecting the machine from power
- Cutting off the 110V power cord plug
- Reconfiguring the motor’s wiring inside the junction box
- Installing a 220V plug (available at most hardware stores)
⚠️ CAUTION: Only an electrician or qualified technician should perform this conversion to avoid the risk of electrocution or fire.
