If your drum sander’s conveyor belt is worn or damaged, replacing it will help keep your machine running smoothly and ensure consistent sanding results. Follow the steps below to safely remove the old belt and install a new one.
⚠ Safety First:
Always disconnect the machine from power before beginning any service or maintenance.
Before You Begin
You’ll be removing several components including the hood, side panel, feed motor, sprockets, and table assembly. Keeping parts organized and noting their position will make reassembly much easier.
We also recommend having your owner’s manual nearby. If you no longer have it, you can download a free copy at www.grizzly.com.
Step‑By‑Step Conveyor Belt Replacement
1. Disconnect Power
Always start by unplugging the machine.
2. Remove the Hood, Left Panel & Sprocket Guards
- Adjust the table to roughly the middle of its travel.
- Remove the hood and left‑side panel.
- Remove all four sprocket guards by loosening their cap screws.
3. Remove the Feed Motor and Chain
- Unbolt the feed motor bracket and carefully lower the motor.
- Most machines have enough wire slack so you do not need to disconnect it.
- Remove the conveyor drive chain and set both the motor and chain inside the cabinet.
4. Loosen the Table Height Adjuster Chain
- Use the adjuster at the outfeed side to reduce tension.
- Remove the chain from the sprockets, but do not remove it from the machine—simply set it aside.
- Note how the chain routes around the two idler sprockets for correct reinstallation later.
5. Remove Front and Rear Braces
Remove the crank handle, then remove the front and rear braces and set them aside.
6. Mark Table Screw Positions
To return the table to its original height and alignment:
- Mark each of the four table screws with tape flags.
- Also mark the captured nuts so you can reinstall everything to the exact same position.
7. Remove Infeed Table Screws
Unscrew the two table screws on the infeed end.
The sprockets and bushings will slide off—keep track of all parts.
8. Remove the Conveyor Belt & Table Assembly
Slide the entire assembly out of the rear of the machine.
Place it on a stable surface (not the top of the sander).
9. Remove the Old Conveyor Belt
- Loosen the conveyor belt adjusters.
- Remove the left‑side roller brackets.
- Slide the rollers out of the table.
- Remove one of the remaining table screws and slide the belt off the table.
Take note of roller bushings and plates for proper reassembly.
Reassembly
10. Begin Reassembly (Opposite of Disassembly)
Do not adjust conveyor tension yet.
Fully tighten the roller brackets.
11. Reinstall the Table Assembly
- Make sure the driven sprocket is positioned at the left rear corner.
- Reinstall the table screws, sprockets, and bushings.
- Ensure the table height chain runs on the outside of the sprockets.
- Reinstall front and rear braces.
- Thread table screws back to their original taped reference marks.
- Reinstall and route the adjuster chain correctly, then tension it just enough to remove slack.
12. Adjust the Roller Brackets & Reinstall Feed Motor
- Adjust distance between roller bracket and bushing support to approx. 1 inch.
- Reinstall the feed motor and tension the drive chain.
- Tension the conveyor belt evenly using the adjusters.
Note: Adjusting conveyor tension affects drive‑chain tension—check both.
13. Final Steps
- Reinstall hood, side panel, and crank handle.
- Carefully start the machine.
- Perform final belt tracking adjustments following the instructions in your owner’s manual.
- Reinstall all guards when finished.
