What are the electrical requirements for the G9740 planer?
The G9740 planer operates on 220V or 440V, 3-phase, 60 Hz power. It comes prewired for 220V, drawing 24A at that voltage. At 440V, it draws 12A. The minimum circuit size is 30A at 220V or 15A at 440V. A 4-foot, 10 AWG power cord is included for 220V operation. For 440V conversion, use the P97400120-11 voltage conversion kit.
What kind of motor system does the G9740 use?
The G9740 features three separate 3-phase TEFC induction motors:
- Main motor: 7.5 HP, 3450 RPM, belt drive
- Feed motor: 1 HP, 1145 RPM, chain drive
- Table elevation motor: 1/2 HP, 1725 RPM, chain drive
All motors use shielded, permanently lubricated bearings for long-term reliability.
What is the planing capacity of the G9740?
- Planer size: 20 inches
- Max cut width: 20 inches
- Max cut height: 9 inches
- Min stock length: 10 inches
- Min stock thickness: 1/4 inch
- Max stock thickness: 9 inches
- Max cut depth (full width): 3/16 inch
- Max cut depth (6" wide board): 5/16 inch
What is the cutterhead configuration?
The G9740 uses a 4-knife cutterhead with HSS, single-sided, solid knives:
- Knife size: 20-1/8" L × 1-3/16" W × 1/8" T
- Cutterhead diameter: 4-5/8 inches
- Cutterhead speed: 5000 RPM
- Cuts per inch: 84–42
- Cuts per minute: 20,000
- Knife adjustment: Jack screws
What is the difference between the G9740 and G9740Z?
The G9740Z is identical to the G9740 in all specifications except for the cutterhead:
- G9740: Uses four 1/8" thick HSS straight knives
- G9740Z: Comes equipped with a spiral cutterhead
Aside from the cutterhead and some visual differences, the machines are functionally identical.
What are the table and construction details?
- Table bed size: 20-1/8" L × 35-3/8" W × 5" thick
- Table movement range: 1/4" – 9"
- Floor-to-table height: 24" – 33"
- Bed rollers: 2
- Construction:
- Table: Precision-ground cast iron
- Body: Cast iron
- Cutterhead assembly: Steel
- Infeed roller: Serrated steel
- Outfeed roller: Smooth steel
- Paint finish: Green powder-coated
What features make the G9740 stand out?
- 4-knife cutterhead (or spiral on G9740Z)
- Twin-V belt drive (main), chain drive (feed & elevation)
- Variable feed speed: 20–40 FPM
- Segmented chip breaker
- Table height lock
- Micro-adjust knob and elevation buttons
