Can I cut metal or non-wood materials with this planer?
No. Planers are designed specifically for cutting natural wood. While they may physically cut other materials, doing so is dangerous, can cause serious injury, and may damage the machine, potentially voiding your warranty.
Can I use my planer without a dust collector?
Yes, but it’s not recommended. Without dust collection, wood chips and dust will build up quickly, creating a mess and increasing cleanup time. Fine dust can also harm your lungs. For best performance and safety, connect your planer to a dust collection system that meets the machine’s required CFM rating.
How do I choose the right motor size for my planer?
Motor size depends on:
-
Typical board width
-
Type of wood you usually cut
-
How frequently and heavily you use the planer
All Grizzly planers can cut hardwoods at full width if you use a slow enough feed rate. But slower feed rates can cause ripples, and too aggressive a feed rate can overheat and damage the motor.
General rule of thumb:
-
A 1.5 HP motor can handle 6" wide hardwoods at a fast feed rate.
-
A 3 HP motor can handle approximately 12" wide hardwoods at the same rate without bogging down.
Choose a motor that matches your typical workload to avoid overheating and extend machine life.
What’s the difference between 110V, 115V, and 120V machines?
These voltages are functionally the same for U.S. consumers and will all run on standard household power. The variation comes from regional manufacturing standards:
-
U.S. nominal voltage = 120V
-
Taiwan = 110V
-
China = 115V
Grizzly lists the exact voltage shown on the motor’s nameplate to provide the most accurate information, avoiding confusion when the machine arrives.
Is there a spiral cutterhead upgrade for this planer?
Yes. The T25670 Spiral Cutterhead fits the DW735X.
Can you install the spiral cutterhead before shipping?
No, Grizzly doesn’t offer pre-installation. However, we do sell planers with factory-installed spiral cutterheads.
How hard is it to convert to a spiral cutterhead?
It typically takes about one hour to swap out a cutterhead. Grizzly offers a video tutorial to guide you through the process.
What’s the difference between the DW735X and DW734?
-
DW734: 12-1/2" planer with single speed
-
DW735X: 13" planer with two speeds and supports spiral cutterhead upgrades
